  1. The ideal candidate must be currently doing a US Residential Mortgage Underwriting or Processing roles . Someone with 2+ years of tenure on these two roles at their current employer, would be the first set of CV's we would like to see for the Underwriter role. All other job experiences like Loan Officer, Funder, Closer, Broker,  Servicing roles like Collector, Bankruptcy/  Payoff, REO Coordinators, Escrow Admin etc.. are not relevant experience for the job that we are hiring, though these are US Mortgage industry experiences.
  2. If candidate's immediate previous job is US Residential Mortgage Underwriting , ( less than 2 years gap, but the last stint in Residential Mortgage Underwriting should be 2+ years or more), we would like to see the CV
  3. We don't want people who have all their present and past experience in commercial mortgages. The regulations and products around residential and commercial mortgages are  worlds apart.
  4. We would prefer people who have Underwritten and Processed both Conventional ( Fannie and Freddie) & VA Mortgage loans ,
    1. both Conforming ( Loan amount <417K) and Jumbo ( Loan amount > 417K) Loan types. The Jumbo Underwriters would be experienced and rare
  5. We would prefer anyone who has a prior experience of Mortgage processing or Underwriting using Accenture's ' Mortgage Cadence' Loan Origination System or Platform
  6. Finally, being USAA, We would prefer if the candidate is a Veteran , who meets the above criteria

     

 

 

Responsibilities :

  • Works under moderate supervision; acquires and applies maturing knowledge of the business, its products, and processes.
  • Evaluate and verify applications - determining whether or not borrower will be able to repay the loan
  • Verify income and employment information, review credit history and calculate the value of the borrower's collateral and assets
  • Ensure that the property specifications and loan terms meet Bank's requirements and government regulations. 
  • Once the application has been evaluated and the degree of risk has been assessed, document the reasons for approval or denial of the loan and add the documentation to the loan file.
  • Maintains knowledge of secondary market activity, and business/industry practices as they impact underwriting quality and origination activity.

  • Must have excellent decision-making skills that are backed by relevant details and research.
  • Must have good analytical and audit skills.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills along with good listening skills
  • Must have knowledge pertaining to the regulations governing mortgage lending.

  • Must be able to handle stress and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to multitask
  • Must pay close attention to detail

     

    Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 2-4 years of related experience and accountability for moderately complex tasks and/or projects required.
  • Junior Level 1: Experience in basic mortgage operations (any function, processing preferred) or consumer loan underwriting.
  • Junior Level 2: Experience in Mortgage loan underwriting (FHA / VA)

 

ROLE:

  • SENIOR UNDERWRITER (HCL Ref: E1.1 / E1.2)

Purpose of Job :

We are currently seeking talented Senior Real Estate Underwriter for our Cary, NC (Regency Parkway) facility. Responsible for rendering decisions on credit applications based on established criteria. Determine creditworthiness and risk associated with borrower based on credit profile. Communicate decisions that most effectively mitigate credit risks, including data integrity and validity of information submitted. Applies understanding of established guidelines, Fair Lending and all other regulatory requirements when evaluating loan attributes while utilizing prudent underwriting judgment and experience.

      

Responsibilities :

  • Works under minimal supervision; acquires and applies advanced knowledge of the business, its products and processes. Uses established procedures and significant job experiences to perform the most complex work assignments and problem resolution.
  • Utilizes lending and exception authority and advanced understanding of all aspects of Mortgage and/or Home Equity underwriting and portfolio guidelines to underwrite the most complex and specialized loan files. Assists lower level Bank Credit Underwriters with loan files as needed.
  • Reviews and evaluates credit applications to assess the loan package for approval of fraudulent activity, and provides feedback to the Processors and Originators to improve the quality of the loan files.
  • Handles complex borrower escalations utilizing knowledge of specialized loan products.

  • Advanced level of business acumen in the areas of the business operations, industry practices and emerging trends required.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience. (Preferable)
  • Certified Residential Underwriter (CRU) Designation from Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) (Preferable)
